It would of been very easy for Green Day to rest on their laurels with this the follow up album to the massive hit that was Dookie. Maybe stick to the sound that had made them such a huge critical and commercial success. Yet with the loss of many fans who thought the band had sold out Green Day hit back with Insomniac, an edgier, darker and definitely more punk sounding album.
There is a real sense of urgency on the album with the fast paced, clever lyrics of Billie Joe Armstrong and the strong and instantly recognizable backing from Mike Dirnt (bass) and Tré Cool (drums). Anyone who has ever seen Green Day live will know how energetic the guys can be on stage and that is what shines through on Insomniac. It is go from the opeining chords of ‘Armatage Shanks’ to the last note of ‘Walking Contradiction’.
Ok so I’ve fan boyed a little here. I’ve loved Geen Day most of my life and can’t recommend them enough but if you like punk and have only heard some of their more commercial tracks then give Insomniac a try. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how hard they go. A personal favourite of mine is the transition from ‘Brain Stew’ to ‘Jaded’.
