With a post punk sound and use of spoken word instead of sung lyrics Dry Cleaning really stand out in a crowded music scene. They’ve drawn comparison to Joy Division, which is high praise indeed, with the slow lilt and worldly observations that makes you just want to sway it’s easy to wander along to New Long Leg.
This is their debut album, but they already have a solid sound, with two E.P.’s under their belt. I know that spoken word is not to everyone’s taste but there is a rhythm to lead singer Florence Shaw’s voice that is almost hypnotic. With familiar lyrics about everyday life and a band that has that post punk melody locked in, this is an easy listen.
A simple addition to the collection of any Joy Division, The Cure or even Interpol fan. Or if you are just a fan of the spoken word genre New Long Leg is a beautiful inclusion into that category.
