Abel Makkonen Tesfaye better known as The Weeknd returns with Dawn FM his fifth studio album. Taking heavy influence from 80’s New Wave, Funk and Electronic Dance styles it is a definite departure from the sound of his previous album After Hours. What hasn’t changed is The Weeknds incredible voice which flows perfectly over the synth heavy sound.
The album contains a large selection of collaborators including Tyler, the Creator an Lil Wayne with some narration by none other than Jim Carrey. For Dawn FM The Weeknd has also brought in the help of some of the best producers on the planet in Calvin Harris and Swedish House Mafia. What comes from all this help is a synth-pop throwback album that wouldn’t sound out of place on an 80’s playlist.
No don’t go away thinking that Dawn FM is only for those 80’s fans because it’s far from that. With The Weeknds skill as a lyricist and a sound that somehow manages to sound fresh while completely retro is one everyone should check out.
